FROM THE OECD INSIGHTS BLOG and THE OECD OBSERVER

The OECD’s Business and Finance Outlook looks at the Greatest Puzzle of Today
The greatest puzzle today is that since the global crisis financial markets see so little risk, with asset prices rising everywhere in response to zero interest rates and quantitative easing, while companies that invest in the real economy appear to see so much more risk. What can be happening? The puzzle is even more perplexing when we see policy makers lamenting the lack of investment in advanced countries at a time when the world economy shows all of the characteristics of excess capacity: low inflation and falling general price levels in some advanced countries for the first time since the gold standard and despite six years of the easiest global monetary policy stance in history. The recipe for a better life
To make a good dish you need more than one ingredient, and this is the same when looking at the quality of people’s lives. It has become clear since the crisis that the sole ingredient of gross domestic product (GDP) as a measure of societal progress is not enough. Governments have to take into account the wide range of factors affecting people’s lives and try to find solutions that spread across many areas of policy. This year’s OECD Forum Investing in the Future People, Planet and Prosperity focusses on essential themes that need to be addressed to create better lives. Read more

Improving the world economy’s B-minus grade
Global growth will gradually strengthen towards its pre-crisis trend rate by late 2016 as activity becomes more evenly shared across the major economies and overall external imbalances are less marked than in the run-up to 2007, according to the OECD’s latest Economic Outlook. Read more

Carbon Pricing: Does the OECD practice what it preaches?
Today, more than 22% of global emissions are covered by a carbon price. Almost 40 countries and over 20 cities, states and provinces use carbon pricing mechanisms or are planning to implement them. Read more

Saving every drop: How the OECD reduces its environmental footprint
We could spend World Environment Day warning of the doom and gloom of future Earth, but considering how much we’ve done that already, that’s not going to get us very far as we approach this year’s COP21 in Paris. Instead, we’re going to give you a taste on what we do here at the OECD headquarters to help save the environment, taking our own medicine on what we prescribe to governments. Read more

Overcoming Barriers to International Investment in Clean Energy
Most of us would agree that clean energy is a worthwhile goal, and the world has invested more than $2 trillion on renewable-energy plants in the past decade. In 2014, energy generators added more renewable capacity than even before. But are we doing enough? According to the IEA, cumulative investment in low-carbon energy supply and energy efficiency will need to reach $53 trillion by 2035 to keep global warming to 2°C. It sounds a lot, and it is, but it’s only 10% more than the $48 trillion that would likely need to be invested in any case in the energy sector if the economy continues to expand and demand for power continues to grow as it has been doing in recent decades. Women in transport
The role of women in the transport sector is something that needs to be addressed. Women account for only 17.5% of the workforce in EU urban public transport for example, and hold less than 10% of technical and operational jobs. In the United States, women comprise only 15% of transport and related occupations and only 4.6% of commercial truck drivers are women. Read more

Crowd sourcing models of fragility
The OECD’s new report States of Fragility 2015: Meeting Post-2015 Ambitions addresses the substantial challenges of defining – and classifying – fragility. The report proposes a multidimensional approach to the concept of `fragility’, rather than using a simple one-dimensional list. It argues that breaking down concepts of fragility into various dimensions can enable better understanding of the causes and drivers of fragility, thereby informing a better response. Read more

A Magna Carta for the earth?
The international discussions under way in the course of this vital year–including July’s Finance for Development Meeting in Addis Ababa, the agreement of a new set of universal Sustainable Development Goals at the UN in September and the climate change summit in Paris at the end of 2015–represent a remarkable and unprecedented opportunity to establish what might be called a “Magna Carta for the earth” for our times. OECD Observer article

A win for the planet is a win for people
The fates of humanity and of the environment are two sides of the same coin. That is why we must focus increasingly on not just development but sustainabledevelopment. To do that, we need to form global coalitions to work for progress on a range of challenges. OECD Observer article
