Risk management of chemicals

  • Report: Best Available Techniques to Prevent and Control Industrial Pollution

This report presents the first comprehensive analysis of approaches to establishing Best Available Techniques (BAT) to prevent and control industrial pollution. Find out the key characteristics of more than nine methodologies to establish BAT and similar concepts, providing governments with good practice insights on how to effectively design or review their approach to determining BAT.

  • Global Forum on Environment - Plastics in a Circular Economy: Design of Sustainable Plastics from a Chemicals Perspective

29-31 May 2018 - The Global Forum aimed to shed light on sustainable plastic good practices and provided an overview of the role of plastics, delivered examples of sustainable plastic design, define "sustainable" from the lens of chemical selection, identified key tools and approaches, and discussed current and future environmental policy instruments to incentivise sustainable plastic design.

  • Portal: Per and Poly Fluorinated Chemicals

The OECD/UNEP Global Perfluorinated Chemicals Group launched a new version of its Portal on Per and Poly-Fluorinated Chemicals. With an improved design, this new Portal aims to facilitate the exchange of information on PFASs to support a global transition towards safer alternatives. Per- and poly-fluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) are substances that have many manufacturing and industrial applications because they impart useful properties (fire resistance and oil, stain, grease and water repellency).

OECD assists countries in developing methodologies for both governments and industry to manage risks posed by chemicals and, when appropriate, to harmonise risk management activities on particular chemicals.

Watch the video recording on Best Environmental Practices for Class B Firefighting Foams

The OECD Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) webinar series brings world experts together to share vital information and best practices regarding PFASs. These free webinars are open to the general public. Video recordings of our PFASs webinars are made available online afterwards. Register for an upcoming webinar or watch the video recordings of our past webinars below.

On 29 January 2019, Eeva Leinala of the OECD Environment Directorate, Thomas Cortina from the Fire Fighting Foam Coalition and Mitch Hubert from Perimeter Solutions addressed Best Environmental Practices for Class B Firefighting Foams in the context of management of per- and polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFASs).

Areas of work

Substitution of harmful chemicals

harmful chemicalsOECD has established an Ad Hoc Group on the Substitution of Harmful Chemicals with the goal of furthering tools and approaches to support decision making for the substitution of chemicals of concern.

Sustainable Chemistry

sustainable chemistrySustainable chemistry encompasses the design, manufacture and use of efficient, effective, safe and more environmentally benign chemical products and processes. ‌‌‌‌‌‌

Perfluorinated Chemicals

PFCsThe OECD/UNEP Global Perfluorinated Chemicals Group was established to facilitate the exchange of information on PFCs and to support a global transition towards safer alternatives.‌‌

Best Available Techniques to Prevent & Control Industrial Chemical Pollution

Icon BAT Best Available Techniques The overall objective of the project is to assist governments to implement policies and practices that embody BAT (or similar concepts) to prevent and control industrial emissions.

Classification and Labelling

classification and labellingThe OECD actively aims to harmonise the international classification of hazardous chemicals. Classification divides chemical substances and mixtures into different categories, based on their physical properties and health and environmental hazards.‌‌‌

Costs and benefits of managing chemicals

Cost and benefits of managing chemicalsThis work supports the socio-economic analysis of management of chemicals by allowing a better quantification and monetisation of health and environmental impacts.
