Gender equality in the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs

The DAC Network on Gender Equality (GENDERNET) has a successful track record of influencing global processes to advance gender equality and women's rights. The GENDERNET's most recent achievements include its influence on the post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the outcome of the Third International Conference on Financing for Development.

Time for implementation

In September 2015, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The focus of the GENDERNET is on supporting the effective implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and other global commitments on gender equality and women's rights by:

  • encouraging mutual learning and knowledge sharing on "what works" in advancing gender equality and women's rights.

  • strengthening accountability and transparency in financing for gender equality and women's rights by ensuring that global and national commitments on gender equality are underpinned by adequate resources for effective implementation.

  • supporting effective partnerships to mobilise the political support, resources, and expertise required to deliver on the SDGs.

At the Third International Conference on Financing for Development, the Addis Ababa Action Plan for Transformative Financing for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment was launched. This Action Plan, developed by the GENDERNET, UN Women, and Member States, outlines the transformative policy and financing actions required to implement the Addis Ababa Action Agenda in support of achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls.

The GENDERNET will hold a joint biennial workshop with the UN Inter‑agency Network on Women and Gender Equality (IANWGE) in January 2016. This workshop will focus on the implementation of the commitments of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on gender equality and women’s rights.
