Introduction

In a bid to counter the malign influence of corruption, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) sponsored a workshop on "COMBATING CORRUPTION IN ASIA AND PACIFIC ECONOMIES" in Manila, Philippines, on 29 September - 1 October 1999. Senior officials and leading representatives from the business sector and civil society in ADB and OECD countries shared views and experiences on efforts to fight corruption on the national and international level.

Objectives

The objective of the Workshop was to raise awareness of the seriousness of the corruption problem and to identify effective anti-corruption strategies. Some 200 participants from more than 36 countries assessed the effectiveness of translating international instruments and programmes into national policies against corruption. The Workshop provided support for anti-corruption initiatives at national, sub-regional, and international levels and identified future actions in the public and private sector, including strategies to promote stronger law enforcement and greater intergrity and transparency in institutional government structures as well as strengthening the role of business ethics programmes and codes of conduct in the private sector.

Partners

Associated partners in the Workshop included the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, the Pacific Basin Economic Council, Transparency International, the United Nations Development Programme, the United States Agency for International Development, and the World Bank Institute. These key players in the international fight against corruption contributed valuable insights gained from practical, hands-on experience in assisting countries in developing credible anti-corruption programmes.
